Alice Lee Armsby Pearson Jorgensen, 90, died peacefully on June 6 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta after suffering a stroke. Born in Flushing, N.Y. on July 26, 1921, she was the daughter of Edward and Madeline (Sweet) Pearson.
A graduate of Oberlin College, she worked briefly for Irving Trust in NYC before joining the U.S. Navy during WWII, becoming a Disbursement Officer or Pistol Packin’ Mama. She earned the rank of Lt. JG and after the war, met and married John B. Jorgensen, a Naval aviator.
Alice retired, and was a resident of Coburg Village in Rexford, N.Y. where she was an active member of the senior residence as poetry editor and contributor to their newsletter, The Villager, from 2000 until her move to Maine in August 2011. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was always kindly.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Jorgensen of Carrboro, N.C.; sons, John S. Jorgensen of South Bristol, and Peter B. Jorgensen of Rexford, N.Y.; two step-grandchildren; 10 nieces and nephews and their children; and the staff of the Huntington Public Library in Long Island, N.Y. where she was a reference librarian for 23 years.
