Alton L. Libby Sr., 81, of Newcastle, died peacefully July 13 with family at his side under the compassionate care of the staff at the Sussman House Hospice Facility in Rockport. He was born Nov. 15, 1936 in Damariscotta, a son of Halvor and Doris Bragg Libby.
Alton was loved by many people. He was a hardworking, no nonsense man who earned his living in the Maine outdoors, digging bloodworms and working in the woods. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed the sport of hunting and fishing. He could often be found tinkering on anything with a motor but loving the restoration of antique tractors. One of his proudest moments was donating a 1919 English Fordson tractor to the Boothbay Railway Museum.
He was predeceased by son, Andrew Libby; father, Halvor Libby; mother, Doris Libby; brother, Jim Libby; sister, Astrid Wallace; and nephew, Scott Libby.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 52 years, Elsie Libby; stepmother, Vivian Libby; children, Sherry Sawyer and husband Mike, Christine Ayers, Alton Libby Jr., Michael Libby and partner Tina, Valerie Harrington and husband Ross, and Altona Lenhart and husband Jim; siblings Pat Dance and husband Jim, Gordon Libby and wife Deedee; David Libby and partner Sharon, John “Willis” Libby and wife Leanna, and Linda Verney and husband Jay; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
With respect to Alton’s wishes there will be no funeral services; a celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
Should friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to Wells-Hussey Post 42 American Legion, 527 Main St., Damariscotta, ME 04543.
