Anne Lenora (Nelder) Beattie, 92, of Wiscasset, former Wiscasset Town Clerk, passed away the night of June 10, in Round Pond, after a long illness. The daughter of Pearl and Sara (Graves) Nelder, she was born Feb. 19, 1916, in Terry, Mont. Coming to Maine as a young girl, she lived for a time in Windsor, later coming to Wiscasset, where she graduated from Wiscasset Academy, in the Class of 1932.
Aside from spending six years in New Jersey and Virginia, as a Navy wife, with her husband Marshall, she spent her entire life in Wiscasset. For several years, Anne worked as the manager at Depositor’s Trust in Wiscasset. She later became active in town affairs, serving as Town Clerk and Registrar of Voters, as well as serving on the school board, and the budget committee and was vocal at both town and selectman’s meetings. She also served as secretary at Wiscasset High School and was a clerk at the Wiscasset Post Office.
A member of the Damariscotta Region B.P.W., she was honored, in 1989, as Member of the Year, by the Maine Federation of Professional Women’s Clubs. She was a passionate member of both the Wiscasset Academy Alumni Association, of which she was past President, and the Wiscasset Female Charitable Organization. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Eastern Star and St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church, for many years. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing bridge, knitting, doing crosswords and spending time with family and friends.
Anne was predeceased by her husband, Marshall Grier Beattie in 1960; brother, Robert; sisters, Marie and Winnifred, and nephew, Robert.
She is survived by her daughters Sara George and husband Jim, and Jean Beattie; grandson, Tim; stepson, Jim Essery and wife Nancy; nephews, Michael and John Nelder; niece, Sally Nelder; sister-in-law, Veda Faloona, and cousin Grace Reeves.
Friends are invited to be with the family, 2-4 p.m., Sat., June 14 at Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Service 2 p.m., Sun., June 15 at St. Phillip’s Church, Wiscasset. She will be laid to rest with her husband at Greenlawn Cemetery.
