Anne Leamy, 90, of Damariscotta, passed away peacefully on Aug. 22 at her daughter’s home in Bethel, Conn. Born on Aug. 15, 1927, in Manhattan, N.Y., she was the daughter of George and Anna Whitehead.
Growing up in New York City, she attended public schools, and was employed at Vogue Magazine after the Second World War.
Anne wed James Leamy in 1948, and raised four children over three decades. The family moved to Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia, before settling in Connecticut. Anne and Jim retired to Damariscotta in 1997. They were married 56 years, until his death in 2004.
She was an independent spirit who had a strong commitment to community. Over the years, Anne spent many hours volunteering at the local hospital and in support of her church parish.
Anne had a wonderful sense of style, an affinity for business and numbers, and a lifelong love of gardening. She was happiest when she was with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Leamy is survived by children, Polly Sangermano of Bethel, Conn., Lauren Leamy of Nantucket, Mass., Tracy Westlye of Clyde, Kan., and James Leamy of Barnstable, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Thurs., Nov. 9 at St. Patrick’s Church in Newcastle, where she will be laid to rest with her husband following the service.
