Annie E. Johnston, 95, died Dec. 7 in Franklin. She was born Oct. 7, 1917 in Belfast, the daughter of Otis W. and Lillian (Applin) Ellis.
Annie graduated from Waldoboro High School and Bliss Business School in Auburn. She worked for Eliot and Strauss Insurance Agency in Thomaston, and she retired from WC Ladd and Sons in Waldoboro and Rockland.
Annie was active in organizing and participating in the Insurance Women of Mid Coastal Maine and was the organization’s first president. She was a member of the National Association of Insurance Women and attended many regional and national conventions. She was also an active member of the Zonta club in Rockland.
Annie joined the Wiwuma Chapter #34 of the Eastern Star on Jan. 12, 1960. She served as Worthy Matron of that chapter in 1970. Annie served as an officer almost every year from the time she joined until she moved away from Waldoboro in 2004. She served as Grand Representative of Maine to South Carolina in 1992. Annie was granted life membership in the Lake View Chapter #179 of Jefferson in 2010.
Annie was a member of the Methodist Church of Waldoboro.
In 1984, Annie joined the Meenahga Grange #555 and was a silver star member.
She was a member of Lend a Hand which was a group to help those in need.
She was an avid quilter and designed many beautiful quilts for family and friends.
Annie was a kind, loving, compassionate and honorable woman.
Annie was predeceased by her husband, Alden Parke Johnston in 1953; son, Donald O. Johnston; and siblings, Alfred O. Ellis and twin, Alfreda Ellis Miller and Aubrey C. Ellis.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William A. Johnston and wife Margaret B. of Mount Desert; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Johnston of Bangor; sister-in-law, Lorraine Ellis of Virginia; nieces, Patricia Ellis Rutledge, Ann Marie Miller Parlin, Carol Sue Miller Manley and Lisa Ellis Von Colln; nephews, Michael Ellis and David Ellis; and several nephews and nieces on the Johnston side.
A private gathering of family and friends to commemorate her life is planned for a future date.
