Arlyn (Terry) Bull Sterling died peacefully on Jan. 5 at St. Andrews Village, where she had lived since 2000. She was born in Paterson, N.J. on Jan. 19, 1916 to Ernest M. and Edith U. Bull, and graduated from Miss Hall’s School and Sarah Lawrence College. Terry grew up in Montclair, N.J., where she was married in 1940 to Charles A. Sterling Jr. (Arch), who predeceased her in 2006. Terry and Arch resided in Montclair N.J., New Canaan, Conn., Naples, Fla., and New London, N.H. before moving to Boothbay Harbor. They were longtime summer residents of Squirrel Island, where Terry managed a busy, welcoming household, cooking and entertaining both family and friends. She also volunteered her time to support many island activities.
She is survived by her four children, Charles A. Sterling III (Chip) and wife Kathy of Berkeley, Cal., Arlyn Doran (Lyn) and husband Charlie of North Attleboro, Mass., James A. Sterling (Jim) and wife Julia of South Freeport, and Carol Laro and husband Steve of Concord, NH; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and loving caregiver and friend of 10 years, Joline Connolly-Allen.
Memorial service 11 a.m., Sat., Jan. 16 at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, 32 Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor.
