Arthur Edwin Johnston, 93, passed away peacefully on July 4 in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was born in Washington, July 28, 1914, the son of William Staples Johnston and Veda-Mae Brooks Johnston.
A graduate of Columbia University, with a Master’s degree from North Carolina State University, he worked as a technical writer for Western Electric for 20 years. Upon retiring, he founded his own real estate company, Johnston Associates. For the next 20 years he was also an instructor in economics and real estate at Forsyth Technical Community College.
A member of Mt. Olivet Lodge, Washington, and of the York Rite bodies, Winston-Salem, N.C., he was a past Commander of the Winston-Salem York Rite. He was also an Eagle Scout and Scout leader with Troop 700 in Winston-Salem, N.C. A member of the Grange for over 60 years, he was an avid gardener and also enjoyed woodworking. For 52 years he was a faithful member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in North Carolina, where for many years he was Superintendent of the Sunday School.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Patricia Dunkel Johnston; four children, Margaret Ohlenschlaeger and husband Peter of Atlanta, Ga.; Georgia Kathryn Johnston of St. Louis, Mo.; William Johnston and wife Susan of Mechanicsville, Va., and Elizabeth Arbittier and husband Douglas of York, Penn.; nine grandchildren; sister Marjorie (Mrs. Calvin Carney) of South China; sisters-in law, Connie Johnston of Washington, Joyce Johnston and Lorraine Bearce, both of Damariscotta; half brother Burton Ludwig, Jr., of Washington; and many devoted nieces and nephews.
Memorial service 2 p.m., Sun., July 13, at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church.
