Audrey C. Rice, 89, of Bristol, passed away on Oct. 20 at Miles Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She was born on July 1, 1921, a daughter of John and Lillian (Russell) Woodward.
Audrey lived all of her life in Bristol, attending local schools. On July 3, 1941, she married Walter Rice and shared 69 years with him. She taught school during WWII and later helped Walter run his sawmill. Audrey is often remembered for her many years of postal service, delivering mail from Damariscotta to Pemaquid Point, and working in the Pemaquid Post Office part-time. She was a life-long member of the Leuign W. Osier Post, No. 8395, and could be found many Monday nights running their fundraising BEANO games.
The Rices enjoyed traveling for many years, visiting New England and Canada. Camping was also a favorite pastime, leading them to own their own campsite on Damariscotta Lake where summer weekends where spent. Audrey’s favorite pastime was gardening, a love she passed on to her granddaughter and great-granddaughter. Family was the most important part of Audrey’s life, and she cherished being able to be close to all of them.
Besides her parents, Audrey was predeceased by her brothers, Charles and Chester.
Audrey is survived by her husband, Walter; son, John and wife Lorraine of Bristol; granddaughter, Lori Bryant and husband Jim of Nobleboro; great-granddaughter, Jessica Bryant Bourne and husband Dan of Newcastle; great-grandson, Nicholas Bryant of Gorham; and sister, Norma Greenlaw of Augusta.
Celebration of Audrey’s life 10 a.m., Mon., Oct. 25 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
