Barbara Alison Smith DeLong, 89, formerly of New Harbor, died Feb. 24 at Cove’s Edge Long Term Care Unit in Damariscotta. The daughter of Bertrand F. Smith and Mabel Ayres Smith, Barbara was born Sept. 18, 1922 in Westborough, Mass. and attended schools in Westborough, Paxton, Oakham and Worcester, Mass.
Cooking for friends and family, playing bridge, and Sunday drives in the country were among Barbara’s favorite pastimes. Whether in Westborough while the children were growing up, or in New Harbor during retirement, Barbara was always very busy as a volunteer in support of many different community organizations. In Westborough, the Women’s Club, Congregational Church, American Field Service Student Exchange Program, Bicentennial Celebration Committee and housing for the elderly were among her favorites. In New Harbor, Barbara served as a member of the Miles Memorial Hospital League, board of directors of the Lincoln Home, town budget committee, town administrator committee, Olde Bristol Days committee, Willing Workers, and Friends of Colonial Pemaquid.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Richard Crane DeLong in 2000; daughter, Katharine DeLong Smith in 2008; and son, Richard Crane DeLong Jr., in 2011.
She is survived by her sister, Ruth Myrtle Reid, 98, of Newcastle; daughters, Patricia DeLong Landry of Bristol, and Judith DeLong of Milford, Mass.; daughter-in-law, Julie Geyer DeLong of Pemaquid; son and daughter-in-law, David Henry and Cynthia Hanna DeLong of Round Pond; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
According to Barbara’s wishes, her body has been donated to the University of New England of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford for the purposes of medical education and research.
There will be a memorial service at a later date.
