Barbara Chase Mullins, 91, of York, died peacefully on Aug. 5 at Sentry Hill, York.
Barbara was born in Whitefield on Jan. 20, 1922, the daughter of Harry and Emma (Pelletier) Chase. Upon graduating from secretarial school, she worked as a secretary in Gardiner. Barbara married Carol H. (“Moon”) Mullins on Sept. 17, 1943, a week before he went overseas in WWII, and did not return for three years. After the war, they remained in the military and were posted worldwide, including Japan, North Carolina, Germany, Maryland, and New Hampshire, before retiring in Durham, N.H. Lt. Col. Mullins then worked for 20 years in the N.H. Department of Transportation, including 15 years as Director of the Turnpike System.
Barbara loved reading, jazz and classical music, flowers, painting, golf, bridge and travel, and she enjoyed a wide circle of friends of all ages. Barbara lived in Durham, N.H. from 1963 to 2003, and then moved to York following her husband’s death after 60 years of marriage.
Survivors include children, Terry Mason and spouse Pam Newberry of Sarasota, Fla., Katherine Hodgeman and husband Bill Hodgeman of Rye, N.H., Michael Mullins of Hyderabad, India, and Elizabeth Mullins and husband Hodson Hussain of Bethesda, Md.; grandchildren, Erika Mason Case, Jill Marchand, Bill Hodgeman, Ryan Hodgeman, and Britany Mullins-Hussain; six great-grandchildren; as well as numerous family members in Whitefield.
Barbara arranged to donate her remains to Harvard Medical School.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Barbara may make a donation to Hospice of Southern Maine or other charity of their choice.
