Barbara Elizabeth (Zybas) Powell, 68, of Damariscotta, entered into everlasting life on the afternoon of Dec. 7, 2019 at Cove’s Edge following a complicated illness.
Born on June 14, 1951 to August and Margaret Zybas, Barbara grew up in Hawthorne, N.J. College took Barbara north to Springfield, Mass., where she graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. That same year, she wed Peter Powell, her spouse of 34 years, and moved to Maine.
Barbara celebrated a teaching career spanning more than 20 years, marked with a brief hiatus to raise three children, before retiring in 2015. For the majority of her career, she brightened classrooms gracing the halls of Nobleboro Consolidated School.
The company of devoted friends (moody or otherwise), family and beloved grandchildren kept a smile on Barbara’s (“Grammie B”) face. It was alongside them she enjoyed volunteering, reading, or gardening. Her love of life and learning fueled attendance to many a musical performance, play, and lecture. As a gifted quilter, needle pointer, knitter and seamstress, Barbara artistically made the world more beautiful with her creations and contributions.
Barbara embodied grace and kindness. Her nurturing spirit shall be deeply missed. Barbara worshiped as a member of the Water of Life Lutheran Congregation.
Survivors include her daughter, Alexandra (Powell) Spare and husband Michael; son, Benjamin Powell and wife Katrina; son, Nicholas Powell and wife Lori; sister, Ardith Harle and husband Jim; brother, Mark Zybas; and grandchildren, Lillian, Samantha, Cooper, David and Piper.
