Barbara Emma Hansen, 93, of Bremen, passed away peacefully at LincolnHealth’s Miles Campus in Damariscotta, on the evening of May 23, 2024. Born in Boston, Mass., on Dec. 31, 1930, she found her forever home in Bremen in 1977, perched on a hill overlooking Greenland Cove. The view gave her great peace in her later years.
Barbara was the youngest of six children, born to Emma (Dube) and John Hansen, of Milton, Mass., all of whom predeceased her. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their families: in Massachusetts, Carol Brown, Sandra Potter, David Campbell, Nancy Jarrett, Jill Peri; in New York, Steven Hansen; in Alaska, Torvald Hansen, Emma Allen, Shelly Jensen, Lisa Pullen; in Washington, Heidi Bond; in Colorado, Karen Caddle; in Alabama, Jayne Stoltz; in Maine, Robbin Therrien; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. She also leaves behind her devoted friend, neighbor, and caregiver, Juanita Roushdy, of Bremen; and many dear friends and neighbors nearby.
In her early years, she was a veterinary technician at Boston’s Angell Memorial Veterinary Hospital. She was quick to regale friends with stories about the many animals she treated there, including a great blue heron.
From 1959 to 1963, she lived in Anchorage, Alaska, to be near her brother, John. Barbara returned to Massachusetts to help manage the family blueberry farm in Pembroke. She eventually relocated to Maine to take care of her mother who had moved there.
Barbara had a quick wit, loved to read, and always stopped to greet a dog! Her passions were field trials with her Weimaraner dogs, playing a fast game of tennis, pizza, riding her Gravely lawn mower, raising vegetables, caring for her blueberry bushes, and meticulously tending her woods and property — no “leaners!” She never forgot her time or knowledge as a vet technician at Angell Memorial, nor were her family far from her mind. She gave joy to all who knew her.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 7 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Newcastle.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta, ME 04543. Condolences, and messages for her family, may be expressed by visiting stronghancock.com.
