Barbara S. Kimball, longtime Bremen resident, died peacefully at home on March 16.
Mrs. Kimball, wife of the late Dean C. Kimball, was born March 26, 1920 in Lynn, Mass.
Mrs. Kimball’s life spoke of her intense devotion to Country, Family and God. During WWII, she served in the WAVES as a Flight Instructor in Florida before she entered service as an educator. The family story is that she taught the famous baseball player Ted Williams how to use flight instrument controls as the highlight of her military service.
Mrs. Kimball’s lifelong dedication to education began in 1942 as an elementary school teacher in Middleton, Mass. The National Honor Society Member served in public and private education, to include being Principal of Central School in Londonderry, Vt. and Dean of Students at Vermont College. Her education career culminated as High School Guidance Director at Richmond High School in Richmond. She retired from education in 1985 and later began work in the Medical Records Department at Miles Memorial Hospital where she worked until she retired again at age 84.
Mrs. Kimball’s many years as a member of the Second Congregational Church of Newcastle were marked with service as Financial Secretary, and as a member of the Library and Flower Committees. When not busy at work and the church, she was involved with the Lincoln Home and served for a period of time as a senior advisor to the Lincoln Home Board of Advisors. She also found time to serve as a President of the American Legion Auxiliary and in the Patriotic Club of Bremen.
Although Mrs. Kimball was predeceased by her loving husband and their son, David Kimball, their grandson, Dustin Dean Kimball, spent part of every summer and every Christmas at the family home learning the history of the house that has passed to four generations of Kimballs.
Mrs. Kimball was an avid sports fan and cheered when the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl and the Red Sox won the World Series. She excelled at crossword puzzles, loved to read, cherished her garden and the birds that flocked to her front yard.
The beautiful baby blankets that she knitted in her retirement were donated to the annual church fair and to the Bremen Fire Department.
She was president of the Lincoln County Union of Woman’s Clubs and also president of the board of the Lincoln Home.
Her daughter-in-law, Charlotte Kimball and special family friends, Oliver and Ginny Libby and their family of Nobleboro, and Gordon and Carol Ann Prentice of Bristol Mills remember Barbara’s strong spirit and wit.
