Belle J. Bowie, 79, of Randolph, formerly of Jefferson, passed away March 24 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus, following a long illness.
She was born in Nobleboro on June 16, 1927, a daughter of the late Glenwood and Florence (Durell) Gallop. She was raised by foster parents, Edna and Clarence Perkins of Jefferson.
Belle attended Jefferson schools and graduated from Erskine Academy in 1945.
She was a member of South Parish Congregational Church in Augusta and was a former Red Cross employee.
She was employed by the State of Maine, working for the Department of Human Services and Attorney General’s Office, retiring from Legal Services for the Elderly.
Belle had a zest for life that never wavered. She was the kind of person that would do anything for anyone, no questions asked. She had a passion for crafts and as of late, was making jewelry. One of her proudest moments in life was when she handmade her daughter’s wedding dress.
Belle was predeceased by her foster brother, Charles Perkins.
She is survived by her daughter, Robin P. Mathews and husband Bill of Randolph; grandchildren, Joshua and Lauren Mathews whom she thought the world of; and many friends.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Thurs., March 29 at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
Funeral service 11 a.m., Fri., March 30 at South Parish United Congregational Church, State St., Augusta.
Burial will be later this spring in Shepard Cemetery, Jefferson.
