Bernice M. Whitfield, of Wiscasset, died Jan. 6 at Cove’s Edge, Damariscotta.
She was born Oct. 2, 1919 in Palmer, Mass., the daughter of Joseph and Mabel (Keith) Slattery.
She graduated from Monson (Mass.) High School in 1938 as valedictorian. After graduation, she worked teaching ballroom dancing at prep schools in the central Massachusetts area. She later worked for Better Brushes during WWII, aiding the war effort. During this time, she won the Women s Golf Club Championship at Monson Country Club.
On Oct. 18, 1947, she married William B. Whitfield. She lived in a number of states while her husband served in the U.S. Navy. In 1963, they moved to Wiscasset where they co-owned both Whitfield Drug Store and Whitfield Motel and Cabins. They retired in 1991.
She enjoyed ballroom dancing, knitting, sports cars, traveling, basketball, and spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed following her son’s and granddaughter’s sports careers even into adulthood.
She was predeceased by her husband on June 7, 2004.
She is survived by her daughter, Debra J. Bergeron and husband Maurice of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; son, Stephen L. Whitfield and wife Janet of Wiscasset; sister, Barbara J. Kowal of Winchester, Mass.; granddaughters, Samantha J. Bishop and husband Roy of Edgewater, Fla. and Sarah M. Whitfield of Wiscasset; great-granddaughter, Alexis M. Bishop of Edgewater, Fla.; niece, Beverly J. Kennedy and husband Gerard of Winchester, Mass.; and two great-nieces.
Celebration of life 10 a.m., Sat., Jan. 19 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset with Rev. John Potter officiating. A gathering of friends and family will follow at the Church Fellowship Hall.
Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Wiscasset, in the spring.
