Bernice Pierson Holcombe, of Boothbay, died on Feb. 12, just two weeks before her 99th birthday. Bernice lived the last years of her life with loving care at the home of her son Peter and his wife Connie Holcombe in Boothbay.
In 1940 Bernice and her late husband Bill built their home and extensive gardens, known as Woods Hill, outside Hopewell, N.J. where they raised their three children, Marjorie, Patty and Peter. Her lovely home reflected her love of nature, flowers and artistic ambience.
Always known for her keen intelligence, Bernice taught French and Latin at Lawrence Junior High School in New Jersey. She was also the head of the language department at that school for many years. Her love of teaching impacted many students.
Bernice and Bill eventually retired at Attleboro, Penn. For 42 years they were part of the East Boothbay summer community in their cottage on the Damariscotta River. There, Bernice continued her love of gardening and developed many friendships along the way.
She is survived by her three children; two grandsons; and six great-grandchildren; as well as her brother, Harry Pierson.
