Betty Utter Dill, 82, of Jefferson, died Feb. 15 at the Maine General Hospital, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Dill was born May 31, 1925, in Sayre, Penn., the daughter of Charles O’Brien Utter and Mabel C. Miller Utter.
Mrs. Dill graduated from Penn State University, where she was the first woman to graduate with a degree in Ceramic Engineering from the Materials Science Department. She continued her education at the University of Pittsburg with a Master’s Degree in Library Science.
During WWII, she was employed with Eastman Kodak at their lens plant. After raising her family, she worked as a librarian with the Sewickly Public Library in Sewickly, Penn. from 1970-1976. At that time, she and her family moved to Jefferson, where she worked at the Jefferson School Library cataloging books.
An active member of the St. Giles Episcopal Church, Mrs. Dill served on the Altar Guild and the Episcopal Church Women’s Group.
She loved to quilt and belonged to area spinning groups. She enjoyed her flower gardens.
She was predeceased by her brother, Richard A. Utter.
Survivors include her husband, Colby Dill, Jr. of Jefferson; children, Anne Elizabeth Dill of Wiscasset, Leslie Dill Gillett of Troy, Mich., Colby Dill III of Holliston, Mass., and Robert D. Dill of Raleigh, N.C.; and grandchildren, Claire Jackman of Hancock, Andrew Gillett of Troy, Mich., Nicholas Gillett of Palo Alto, Cal., Eric D. Dill of Raleigh, N.C., and Anne Marguerite Dill of Holliston, Mass.
Celebration of Mrs. Dill’s life 10 a.m., Sat., Feb. 23 at the St. Giles Episcopal Church, 72 Gardiner Rd., Jefferson, with the Rev. John Van Siclen officiating.
