
Captain Harold Leonard Small, 94, passed away on the early morning hours of Aug. 7 at Round Pond Green in Round Pond.
Born and raised in New Harbor, he was the son of Phillip Leonard Small and Phyllis Small. He travelled across the globe to over 60 countries throughout his life.
In his early years, Capt. Harold Small was part of the Merchant Marines during WWII, and delivered key goods to Europe. On one journey, he had his ship torpedoed by a German U-Boat and survived with his crew on the ocean for one week.
After the Merchant Marines, Capt. Harold Small joined States Marine – Isthmian, and was promoted to Port Operation Manager and Owner’s Representative in the Asian and South East Asian ports. In 1988, Capt. Harold Small decided to retire; however, in 1990/1991 he was called out of retirement to master the S.S. Equality State for Operation Desert Shield/Storm.
He leaves his son, Gordon Phillip Small and wife Ryoko Small; and grandchildren, Sean Leonard Small and Sora Harold Small; as well as many close friends.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Thurs., Aug. 18 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
