Captain Robert S. Hopkins, of Walpole, passed away on Nov. 6 following by-pass surgery at Portland’s Maine Medical Center.
Captain Hopkins was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and graduated from Ardrossan Academy and Strathclyde University. He also had a long and distinguished career in the British Merchant Marine.
He had a twinkle in his eyes, a smile for everyone and a Scottish brogue that made the telling of his sea adventures spellbinding and wonderful lessons in history.
In 1961 Roy moved to America as an executive with an international steamship company in a successful effort to provide more stability for his family. Later when he retired, he and his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth decided to settle in Maine because it reminded them of their Scottish homeland. He began a second career as a real estate broker in Damariscotta.
Roy is survived by his beloved and devoted wife Elizabeth; five children; 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; and many, many wonderful friends.
