Carlene (Malloy) Nourse, 79, of Chamberlain, formerly of Medfield, Mass., died on Nov. 27 at Miles Medical Center in Damariscotta.
Born in Winchester, Mass. on June 2, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Neil and Theresa (Morrison) Malloy. She was raised in Winchester and was a graduate of Woburn High School.
Carlene served as assistant press secretary for Massachusetts Governor Christian A. Herter until 1957, when he became Secretary of State under President Eisenhower. She remained a member of his personal staff in Washington, D.C. Returning to Massachusetts, Carlene became involved in John A. Volpe’s successful 1960 gubernatorial campaign. She then served as the Governor’s Deputy Chief of Staff.
On Feb. 25, 1961, Carlene married Attorney William F. Nourse and a short while later settled in Medfield, Mass. to make a home for their growing family. She was very active in her children’s development and the family enjoyed time spent skiing and summering at their second home in Intervale, N.H. As their children grew, Carlene began to take on various responsibilities at her husband’s Medfield law office. She also kept her hand in politics by acting as the secretary the Republican Town Club of Medfield for 20 years. She and Bill moved to Chamberlain in 1990, where they enjoyed a peaceful retirement and occasional cross country skiing.
She is survived by her husband, Atty. William F. Nourse; daughters, Pamela Nourse of Abbot and Amanda Nourse of Brighton, Mass.; and sons, Christopher Nourse of Chamberlain and Anthony Nourse of Arlington, Va.
Funeral 10 a.m., Thurs., Dec. 2 at the Roberts-Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 Miller St., Medfield. Visiting hours Dec. 1. Burial private.
