Caroline Hemingway Norton, of Bremen, lovingly known as “Totchie” passed away peacefully on March 25 at Chase Point Assisted Living in Damariscotta surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Dec. 5, 1920 in Garden City, N.Y., the daughter of Stuart and Madeline Cooney Hemingway. She attended the Goodyear-Burlingame School in Syracuse, N.Y. and graduated from The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Conn. in 1938. Caroline continued her education at Syracuse University before joining the war effort on Coronado Island, Cal. On March 17, 1945 she married her husband, John, and the family resided in Wallingford, Conn. until moving to Bremen in 1980. She was an active member of the Gaylord Hospital Auxilary in Wallingford and the Bremen Patriotic Club for many years. Boating as well as island picnics with her family, attending church suppers, and scouting out tag sales were among her favorite pastimes.
She was predeceased by a son, John Norton Jr.
She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, John of Bremen; sons, Jeffrey and wife Rebecca of Bremen and Paul and partner Patrick of Greenville, Tenn.; daughter Ellen Peters and husband Chuck of New Gloucester; sisters, Nancy Symington of Camden and Jean Hemingway of Rumford, R.I.; and brother, Richard Hemingway of Houston, Tex.; grandchildren, Jack Norton of Camp Stanley, South Korea, Laura Kolarikovi of Kurim, Czech Republic and Matt Norton of Waldoboro, two great-grandchildren; and 25 nieces and nephews.
Memorial service to celebrate Caroline’s life 10:30 a.m., Mon., April 4 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
