Carroll F. Schroeder Jr., 82, of Newcastle, passed away on the morning of June 27 at the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor. Carroll was born on May 5, 1934 in Newport, R.l., to Carroll and Alpha Schroeder Sr. He was the husband of Marion Lawrence Schroeder of Newcastle. This coming July 20th would have been their 57th wedding anniversary.
Carroll was a 1951 graduate of Dartmouth High School in Dartmouth, Mass. Right after graduation, he began working for the Steam Ship Authority of Massachusetts. He completed engineman’s school in Groton, Conn., then entered the U.S. Coast Guard in November of 1956. He had 19 years of accountable Sea Time, from 1970-71 as Chief Warrant Officer IV. He served in Vietnam on the Sherman 720. The men that he served with in Vietnam remained friends throughout his lifetime, and these friendships were very important to him. He retired from the Coast Guard in August of 1979 in Portland.
Carroll’s next chapter of work was at Bath Iron Works, beginning in October of 1979 as part of the Operating Crew. He obtained his Chief Motor Vessels License in August of 1980, and retired from BIW 2002.
Carroll was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Nobleboro, where he recently completed over 20 years of teaching an adult Sunday school class.
Carroll’s mother, Alpha, was born in Norway. He carried on many of the Norwegian traditions that he was brought up with, and passed them down to his children and grandchildren. He and Marion participated in the Sons of Norway chapter in Maine.
Carroll is survived by his wife, Marion of Newcastle; sister, Lorna Ruth Schroeder of Westwood, Mass.; daughters, Ruth Schroeder Halter of Tucson, Ariz., Laura Schroeder of Edgartown, Mass., and Nancy Schroeder of Tucson, Ariz.; son, Carl Schroeder of Newcastle; and grandchildren, Ellis and Ali Halter of Tucson, Ariz., and Jacob L. Schroeder of Newcastle.
A time of visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m., Wed., July 6 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m., Thurs., July 7 at the First Baptist Church of Nobleboro. He will be laid to rest in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Round Pond.
