Carroll Sewell Waltz, 85, died at home July 29 with his family, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born, grew up and went to school in the village of Damariscotta Mills. His parents were Irene and Sewell Waltz. He was the oldest son in a family of 11 children.
His siblings are Priscilla Hatch, Robert Waltz, Raymond Waltz, Margaret Russell, Gertrude Pinkham, Judith Campbell, Gloria Phillips and Frank Waltz.
Carroll served as a Marine during WWII. He was employed by the Maine Department of Transportation for 40 years, beginning as a shovel operator and ending as a road construction foreman. After his retirement, he worked for several years for N.C. Hunt.
Carroll and wife Florence spent many summers, including this one, at their cottage on Damariscotta Lake with lots of friends and family all around them.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Aubrey and Henry Waltz.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Evelyn (Plummer) Waltz, whom he married on his birthday, May 27, 1949; children, Barbara Neeson and husband J.D., and Gerard Waltz and wife Sue; grandchildren, Christina Rice and husband Randy, Angelina Waltz, John Waltz and wife Charity, Rhea Butler and husband Oliver, Jesse Daiute and Johanna Neeson; great-grandchildren, Jennifer Genthner, Caleb Rice, Kyra, Shyla and Harley Waltz; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Time of visitation 5-7 p.m., Thurs., Aug. 2 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Funeral 11 a.m., Fri., Aug. 3, also at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in the Highland Cemetery in Nobleboro.
