Cecil E. Prior, 94, of Loud’s Island, died Jan. 14 at the Edgecomb Green.
Cecil was born Dec. 4, 1915 in Round Pond, the youngest child of Thomas and Lettie Hoffses Prior. He graduated from Lincoln Academy, class of 1934. After graduation he went lobstering. In 1937 he took over the “mail run,” which meant he rowed to and from the mainland each day to retrieve the mail for the island post office, he continued this for over 30 years. While living on Loud’s Island, Cecil farmed and used his boat Free Rider to transport people to and from the island, until he moved to the mainland year round in 1984. He was also a lobster buyer for Zahn’s and worked as a sawyer at Messina’s and North Country Wood Products.
In his later years “Gramps” enjoyed visiting with his friends at various local restaurants, Round Pond Harbor and John’s Bay Boat.
Cecil was a lifetime member of the Round Pond Odd Fellows.
He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Anderson Prior; brother, Thomas; sisters, Lois Anderson, Leah Hoyt, and Dora Dolloff; and nephew, Clayton “Bud” Dolloff.
Survivors include his grandsons, Michael of Bristol, and Rex of Nobleboro; great-grandsons, David and Jacob; and close family friends, “daughter” Jan Stoddard and her son, Patrick of Round Pond.
At Cecil’s request there will be no service, his remains will be scattered at Little Harbor with his wife.
