Charles “Bud” Day, 84, of Damariscotta, passed away at his home in Damariscotta on the morning of Aug. 17. Bud was born on Feb. 9, 1927 in Jamestown, N.Y., the son of Esther Stark and C. Burton Day.
The family moved to Westwood, N.J. where he continued his grammar and high school education, and where he would also meet his future wife. It was while there that he formulated his solid character, a character that led him to become an Eagle Scout.
Immediately after graduation he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served during WWII in the occupation of Europe. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he attended Lehigh University for two years before transferring to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. He graduated with high honors in 1951 and was selected to be a part of Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Pi – two highly respected honorary engineering societies.
Bud joined Gilbane Building Company after graduation, and on Sept. 15, 1951, he married his dear sweetheart, Jean Elizabeth Bonnell. He would later go to work for Procter and Gamble as an engineer for over 30 years. Among his many assignments were building projects in London, England, Brussels, Belgium and Mataro, Spain in addition to Cincinnati, Ohio and Staten Island, N.Y.
Bud retired from Proctor and Gamble in 1986, and he and Jean found their home in Damariscotta. Once retired, Bud immersed himself in the community. He held many leadership roles and volunteered for many community organizations. He was caring, modest and was always looking to help others. Above all, Bud was a wonderful husband and loving father.
He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Jean Bonnell Day of Damariscotta; daughters Linda Day and son-in-law David Scardino of San Pedro, Cal., Beth Flynn and son-in-law Tom Flynn with grandchildren David and Emma Flynn of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Amy Chase and son-in-law David Chase of Center Sandwich, N.H.
A memorial service for Bud will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Newcastle at a future date.
