Charles “Butch” Hewson, Jr., 62, of Jefferson and Ormond Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 30 after a long illness with his wife Mary and family by his side.
Butch was born Aug. 26, 1944 in Schenectady, N.Y., a son of Charles Richard Hewson, Sr. and Shirley Edwards Hewson. He grew up in Natick, Mass. and graduated from Natick High School in the class of 1963.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Army where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action, and retired as a sergeant in the infantry in the American Division.
After the war, he graduated from Bentley College. He worked as a manufacturing engineer in the hi-tech industry for over 20 years, retiring in 1999 to Maine and Florida. He lived in Sterling, Mass. from 1977 to 1999.
He was a member and officer of the Massachusetts Mid-State Antique Auto Club, and Sterling Fair Brothers of the Brush Association. Butch had many interests including car restoration, sailing, skiing, tennis, cycling, camping, photography, music, animals, and traveling.
He was predeceased by his mother, Shirley; sister, Andrea Burg; and brother, Peter.
Butch is left by those who will celebrate his life: wife, Mary C. Wynne of Jefferson and Ormond Beach, Fla.; son, Jeffrey N. of Worcester, Mass.; daughters, Jaime Hewson Wood of Hudson, N.H., and Katie E. of Sterling, Mass.; father, Charles R., Sr. of Jefferson; sisters, Sandra Walton and Deborah Benedict, both of Ormond Beach, Fla.; brothers, David of Waldoboro and Mark of Jefferson; grandchildren, Peter D. and Nicholas C., both of Worcester, Mass.; and the mother of his three children, Denise A. Hewson of Sterling, Mass.
Memorial service to celebrate Butch’s life 4:30 p.m., Sun., Sept. 3 at St. Giles Episcopal Church in Jefferson. Burial will follow in Hall Cemetery, Jefferson.
