Charles Edmund Van Nostrand, 90, of Walpole, passed away on the evening of July 7 at Lincoln Home in Newcastle.
The son of Julianna Frances Sokoll and David Waters VanNostrand, he was born in Astoria, N.Y., March 22, 1916.
Charles attended public schools in Astoria, N.Y. and Flushing, N.Y., and went on to earn a BS Degree from Cornell University and a Master of Arts Degree from Columbia University. After college, he worked for The New York World’s Fair for two years, later relocating to Maine where he taught high school in both Wytopitlock and Milo.
With failing eyesight, he retired to the home of his parents in Walpole. For many years, he was seen either walking or riding on the back of his tandem bicycle along Rte. 129. He was an avid short-wave radio enthusiast, listening every day. He also loved to swim in the river whenever he got the chance. He will be missed by many neighbors and friends who received a smile and a wave, while on his daily walks.
Charles leaves his loving niece and nephew, Barbara Bell of Walpole and Harry Bell of Old Bethpage, N.Y., as well as many great-nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to be with the family 2-4 p.m., Thurs., July 13 at Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta, where a brief service to honor Charles will take place at 4 p.m., Reverend Ken Dale officiating.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Damariscotta.
