Charles “Gerry” F. Bruno, 91, of Wiscasset, died unexpectedly on Nov. 8 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. Gerry was born on July 9, 1919 in New York City to Charles and Ida Bruno.
His childhood was spent in Boston and Rockport, Mass. He attended local schools before going to the Arizona Desert School in Tucson. Gerry was a Navy pilot during WWII. In 1945, he married Barbara Jackson of Scarsdale, N.Y.
After the war, he graduated from Brown University and later earned his Masters degree from Boston University. He worked at Shell Oil in Manhattan for many years before becoming a teacher, a career he enjoyed the rest of his life. Gerry taught math at both private and public schools, including Gloucester High School.
Gerry was an avid skier and retired to a farm near Sugarloaf Mountain in Kingfield. His greatest love though, was the sea, and he sailed it from the age of six to just past his 90th birthday. Indeed, his happiest days were cruising the Maine coast with wife Barbara, their dog, and a couple of lobsters. Gerry and Barbara spend their summers at Hunting Island off Cape Newagen, where he enjoyed sailing, puttering around the house and spending time with friends and family for nearly 50 years. In 2006, he and Barbara moved to a village home in Wiscasset where they settled most comfortably.
Gerry is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara; sons, Peter, Timothy and Jonathan; three grandchildren; and one lovely great-granddaughter.
A memorial is planned for the spring.
