Charles H. Colby Jr., 84, of Damariscotta, formerly of Westport Island, passed away Jan. 23 at Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath.
He was born in Bath, April 22, 1922, a son of Charles H. and Vinetta Colby.
He attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School.
Charlie served in the U.S. Army.
He married Alice Marie Robichaud in 1944.
He was employed by the Dept. of Transportation in Edgecomb for 30 years as a truck driver, and later was a self-employed farmer selling produce.
Charlie was very active in auto racing and raced from 1970 to 1978. He continued to be active in racing with his son and grandson. He loved hunting, farming, and his daily visits to the Wiscasset Irving to meet his friends.
Charlie will be missed very much by family, friends, and those who knew him.
He was predeceased by his wife, Alice Colby, in 1989; and one daughter, Diane Rittle.
He is survived by one son, Charles H. Colby III and wife Debbie of Newcastle; daughter, Helen Langer of Arrowsic; grandchildren, Chuck, Patty, Susanne, Tammy, Darryl, Howard, P.J., Wanda, Nicole, Peggy, Sheila, and Rachel; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
At his request there will be no services.
