Charles H. Stevens Sr., 85, of Topsham, died April 4 at his home. He was born Aug. 9, 1929 in Gouldsboro to Bernice Keith and Nicholas Stevens. Charles was raised by his mother and stepfather, Douglas Young Sr. He grew up in Gouldsboro and attended local schools. He joined the U.S. Army in 1949 and served in Korea during the Korean War.
Charles moved to Boothbay to work at Goudy and Stevens Shipyard and Hodgdon Brothers building minesweepers. He met his future wife, Priscilla Reed, while changing her flat tire after work one day; it was typical of Charlie to be helping someone out. He also worked for Walbridge Brothers for many years and eventually he worked, self-employed, as a plumbing and heating technician for many years until he retired.
He was superintendent of the East Boothbay Water District and volunteered as a fireman for the town of East Boothbay. Charles was well known as a hardworking man who was always willing to help anyone who needed it. He was kind and fair to everyone and had a good sense of humor. He liked to go fishing, hunting, and camping. He also enjoyed antique cars and most importantly spending time with his family.
He was predeceased by his mother, Bernice Young; step-father, Douglas Young Sr.; son, Randy Stevens; brothers, Wayne Young and LeRoy Young; and sisters, Marjorie and Leola.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Priscilla Stevens of Topsham; sons, Gary Stevens and wife Gail of Phippsburg, and Charles Stevens Jr. and wife Chris of Boothbay; daughters, Kathy Stevens of Falmouth, Donna Brunette and husband David of Bowdoin, Laurie Ellen Stevens of Topsham, and Heidi Stevens and companion Donald Pelletier of Wiscasset; sister, Clara Daley and husband Kendall of Gouldsboro; brothers, Richard Young and wife Connie of Cherryfield, and Douglas Young Jr. and wife Aileen of Ellsworth; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
