Charles North Ludlow, 82, died Feb. 28 at home with his family. He was born on March 22, 1927 in Glen Cove, L.I., N.Y., the son of Jane (North) Ludlow and Charles E. Ludlow.
Two defining experiences in Charlie’s early years were as a camper, later a counselor, at Mowglis, a boys camp located on Newfound Lake in New Hampshire, and his service in the Navy during WWII. These experiences instilled his enduring loyalty to country and love of nature and the sea.
After the war Charlie attended Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. where he majored in psychology, graduating Cum Laude with Honors, Class of 1950. His business life began in NYC in the chemical industry, international sales, with Allied Chemical, Occidental Petroleum and Ruco Polymers. His 35-year career involved extensive travel where he established life-long relationships and friendships worldwide.
Charlie and his wife Joan (Toombs) Ludlow were married in 1955 and lived in Sea Cliff, L.I., raising a family of three sons: David N., John S., and James E. Ludlow. Upon retirement Charlie and Joan moved to S. Reading, Vt. and an old farmhouse the family had spent many years restoring. Most recently Charlie and Joan have made Maine their home, first in Pemaquid Harbor, then in Bristol.
During retirement years Charlie was a very active volunteer with Vermont Institute of Natural Science and the Vermont and Maine Veterans Administrations. Charlie became interested in restoring and collecting antique engines and tractors. He enjoyed his membership in the Bristol Lions, was an active member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Assoc. and attended Navy reunions with shipmates who served on the USS Fogg, DE-57.
Charlie was predeceased by his son, James.
He is survived by wife, Joan; sister, Jane (Ludlow) Bowne of Perkinsville, Vt. and Northampton, Mass. and her family; son, David and wife Deborah (Venno) Ludlow and their children John, William and Anna; and son, John and wife Eileen (Byrne) Ludlow and their sons, Daniel and James.
The family plans a memorial service at a later date.
