Charles Pike Howe, 84, of Westport Island, died June 13 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.
He was born in Winchester, Mass. on March 7, 1929, a son of Guy and Carolyn (Dow) Howe.
He graduated from Suffield Academy in Suffield, Conn. and attended Lowell Tech in Lowell, Mass. He served in the U.S. Navy on a destroyer. Upon his military discharge, he began his work career in the textile industry in Springfield, Mass. In 1954 he met Sara Ann Bassett and they were married in the fall of 1955.
Following his marriage he returned to Andover, Mass. and began a 40-year career in sales and service in the equipment industry.
He resided and raised his family in Andover and spent summers on Westport Island. In 1984 he became a permanent resident of Westport Island and was employed by Kennebec Equipment Rental Company until his retirement in 1999.
Charlie was an avid sailor and loved spending time on Knubble Bay.
He was a member of St. Matthews Lodge Masonic Temple in Andover, Mass., Andover Volunteer Fire Department, The First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, and Westport Island Community Association.
Charlie was predeceased by his brother, Guy B. Howe Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Ann Howe of Westport Island; son, Mark Howe and wife Patty of Dover, Mass.; daughter, Vicki Hoyt and husband Brian of Andover, Mass.; and grandsons, Drew, Matt and Chris Hoyt, and Nathan and Alex Howe.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
