Clarence R. Colby, Sr., 82, of New Sharon, died Nov. 5 at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Dec. 23, 1923 in Bath, a son of Charles and Vinette (Huff) Colby.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 786th Ordinance Company. He was a driver for the Bath Bus Service in the early 1940’s. He later owned and operated Colby’s Shoe Repair in Bath for many years before moving to Lynn, Mass., where he worked for General Electric.
In 1972, he returned to Westport Island and was employed at Bath Iron Works until he retired in 1982.
Clarence enjoyed many hobbies, including hunting, fishing, gardening, and woodworking. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel I. (Bates) Colby of New Sharon, whom he married on May 6, 1944 in Bath; son, Clarence Colby, Jr. and wife Darlene of Westport Island; daughters, Debbie A. Bailey and husband Jeffery of Westport Island, and Sherry A. Callahan of Cornville; six granddaughters; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; three great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Wright of Woolwich and Bernice Savory of Lynn, Mass.
The family would like to thank the staff at Franklin Memorial Hospital and Orchard Park Nursing Home for the excellent care Clarence received.
Funeral services 1 p.m., Wed., Nov. 8 at the Wiles Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Rd., Farmington.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Center 6-8 p.m., Tues., Nov 7.
Interment will be at the New Maine Veteran’s Cemetery in Augusta.
Those who desire may make memorial contributions in Clarence’s memory to the charity of their choice.
