Curtis B. Weed Sr., 87, of Waldoboro, died Sept. 13 at his residence surrounded by his family after a long period of failing health.
Mr. Weed was born April 30, 1922 in Rockport, the son of Walter E. and Josephine A. Brooks Weed. Losing his mother at age seven and father at age 11, he attended the Hinckley School for Homeless Children briefly, then entered the foster care system, living in several Midcoast area homes.
Joining the U.S. Navy in 1942, he attended Naval Training School (Torpedoman School) in Newport, R.I., changed to Air Ordnance School, and then was based at Naval Air Station Great Exuma in the Bahamas, eventually being discharged in 1946.
In June of 1946, he married Virginia V. Sanborn, and they began their life together living in Camden. He began working for a local painter, Fred Ames, before briefly joining Sargent Construction in Bangor and then The Lane Construction of Meriden, Conn. He supervised large construction projects, including highways, airports and large dams throughout the eastern U.S. He retired in the early 1980s when his health forced his early retirement. In 1954 they moved to Waldoboro.
After retirement, and not one to sit around, he began his long active association with many community organizations. He was an active participant in the church life of the Broad Bay Congregational U.C.C. in Waldoboro, a life member of the Odd Fellows since 1948, a member of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, Waldoboro V.F.W. and American Legion, a volunteer with Waldoboro Head Start, Meals on Wheels, the Friendship Street School, the Feyler’s Corner Community Club, was a regular visitor to the Waldoboro Public Library, was a founding member of the Board of Directors of CHIP, and was a Plank Owner of the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Virginia Weed of Waldoboro; daughter, Janet Gallagher and husband Charles of Waldoboro; son, Curtis B. Weed, Jr. and wife Karen of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandsons, Andrew Gallagher and wife Anne Tiballi of Philadelphia, Penn., Brett Gallagher of Philadelphia, Sean Weed of Thomaston, Jeremy Weed of Albuquerque, N.M., and Kris Weed and wife Lina of Beijing, China; great-grandchildren, Christian Weed of Thomaston, Shi Lynn Weed of Cherryfield, and Jet Li Weed of Beijing, China; sister, Thedessa Cheney and husband Sidney of Campton, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.
Private family service was held at the graveside with interment at Sea View Cemetery, Rockport.
