Cindy (Swanson) McCrum, 65, of Newcastle, passed away peacefully on Oct. 28 at her home surrounded by her family.
Raised in Hopedale, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Herbert S. Swanson and Thelma L. Swanson-Curtis of Waterville. She graduated from Hopedale High School in 1965, received her degree in Nursing from Keuka College in Keuka Park, N.Y. in 1969 and later received her Master’s degree from Framingham State College. She married Milton W. McCrum, also of Hopedale, Mass., on Dec. 5, 1971. They lived on a small farm in Mendon, Mass. for many years before moving to Newcastle in 2001. While in Mendon, she worked as the Executive Director of the Greater Milford-Northbridge Area Visiting Nurses Association for 29 years. She then became Executive Director of the independent and assisted living facilities of Chase Point and Schooner Cove in Damariscotta. She was very well loved by her colleagues and the residents alike.
From the time she was a young girl, she enjoyed spending summers in Maine on her aunt and uncle’s farm in Limington. Later, she and her husband had a summer home in Naples, where they spent 10 years making memories on the lake with their family. She greatly enjoyed traveling and taking scenic drives throughout New England, Canada and the western states of the U.S.
She was an avid baker, and enjoyed reading, collecting antiques and taking care of her grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Always a positive, upbeat and compassionate person, words could never fully describe the love and kindness she gave over the course of her life.
She is survived by her mother, Thelma L. Swanson-Curtis; stepfather, Hartley Curtis; brother, H. Steven Swanson of Hauppauge, N.Y.; husband, Milton W. McCrum; stepdaughters, Tracy Anderson of Mendon and Laurie Armstrong of Mendon; daughter, Kelly McCrum of Millville; granddaughters, Lindsay Schmitt, Alison Armstrong, Megan Armstrong, Anna McCrum and Catherine McCrum; and several nieces and nephews.
