Dana Harold Hughes, 58, of Bristol, passed away peacefully this past week at his home. Born in Portland on Sept. 13, 1953 to Harold and Marilyn (Littlefield) Hughes, Dana spent his childhood swimming whenever he could. This would eventually lead to a job as a lifeguard and swim instructor in high school, where he graduated in 1971 in Holliston, Mass.
After high school, he went to Dean Junior College and then Ferrier School, where he became proficient at equine care and management, a passion shared by his cousin Donna. For the first part of his adult career however, he was an oil inspector for the giants in the industry: Camin Cargo, Sabolt, and Inspectorate, just to name a few. He started managing the field offices and traveled around the U.S. to Massachusetts, Texas and California. He was very good at his job and was promoted to setting up offices around the world in places like China, Switzerland, Canada and Australia.
Later in life, he came back to the Bristol area, building his own house near Bristol Mills to be near his parents and two daughters, Rachel and Meridith. He started attending Lincoln County Assembly of God where he began teaching Bible studies, Sunday school, and eventually became church treasurer. He even started studying to become a lay preacher. In addition, he also was a Notary Public, a title he took on so he could marry his eldest daughter, Meridith, to her husband Frank Glover this past June.
A devoted Christian man, he could be found reading his Bible, attending church meetings and always making someone smile with his great sense of humor, usually his sister Janet. Having grown up around, and mostly in the water, Dana loved fishing on the ocean with his Dad and brother Harold. He was a loving father, son, brother and church member.
He is survived by his parents, Harold and Marilyn (Littlefield) Hughes; daughters, Meridith and Rachel Hughes; sister, Janet Hughes; a brother, Harold and wife Lynn Hughes; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
At his request there will be no funeral service. There will be a private interment for the family, at the Black Point Cemetery in Scarborough.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dana’s memory may be made to the Lincoln County Assembly of God, 672 Main St., Damariscotta, ME 04543.
