Daniel Sawyer, 36, of Whitefield, traveler of the world, disappeared at sea Oct. 16.
He was born July 26, 1972, the second son of Gerald and Grace Preble Sawyer. He attended Whitefield School and Wiscasset High School.
He graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1994. While serving in the Merchant Marines for 11 years, he visited every continent except Antarctica. He delighted in bringing back gifts from each of these for friends and family. His favorite port of call was Australia. He lived life to the extreme, skydiving, mountain biking, mountain climbing and kayaking.
Besides his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Andrew, Alex and Duncan; longtime companion Megan Rice; uncle, Chip Preble and wife Judy of Five Islands; aunts, Rosalie Barden and husband Richard of Gorham, Lynn Haugen of Mattapoisett, Mass., and Terri Peaslee of Jefferson; second mom, Karen Fake of Five Islands; first cousins, Sheree Smith, Annmarie Preble, Jessica Preble, and Chip Preble and numerous others; and his two nephews, Zachary and Deacon Sawyer.
Memorial gathering and celebration of life 1-5 p.m., Sat., Nov. 8 at The Calumet Club on West River Rd. in Augusta. Please bring your favorite memories; feel free to dress informally.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a contribution to your favorite charity, or do good deeds to honor his memory. He was always the first to offer help when needed by family and friends.
