Daniel Stearns Hylan, 74, of Farmington, died Aug. 16 at home with his family.
He was born Aug. 31, 1940, in Strong, the son of Henry William Hylan and Phyllis Kennedy Hylan. Except during WWII years when his dad worked in the shipyards in Portland and the family lived at Prout’s Neck, Dan grew up in Farmington, graduating from Farmington High School in 1958. He received his B.S. in Education at Farmington State Teachers College in 1962, and both his Masters in Education in 1967 and his Certificate of Advanced Study in 1969 from the University of Maine.
He married his high school sweetheart, devoted companion and caregiver, Marilyn Marie Morton, on June 22, 1963. Dan taught at Brewer Junior High School, Brewer High School, Husson College and later taught at Dirigo High School in Dixfield and eventually moved back to Farmington. He spent 29 years teaching in the classroom before devoting much of his time to his second career, buying and selling antiques for his business “Over Fifty Antiques.” He enjoyed meeting and working with the many people he met as he traveled for his business, stopping only when illness prevented him from working.
He loved the many summers he spent with his family, friends and neighbors at Pemaquid. There he painted, worked as a stern man on a lobster boat, clerked in the Village Market, cooked at the Captain’s Catch and appreciated the beauty of the ocean. He also had a great appreciation for wildlife and nature and the many family dogs and cats that were part of the family over the years.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marilyn; daughter, Marion Hylan Barr, husband John A. Barr of Hallowell and their daughter Clio Marie Barr; son, Daniel F. Hylan, girlfriend Erinn Sullivan Michaud of Skowhegan and her daughters Olivia and Emily Michaud; sister-in-law, Patricia Morton Larson and husband Ed of Wayne; brother-in-law, Richard M. Morton and wife Joyce of Farmington; cousin, Peter Kennedy and wife Marita of East Orleans, Mass.; nieces, Rebecca Larson and husband Peter Lord of Washington, D.C., and Christina Larson Belknap and husband Sam of Milford; nephews, John Morton and wife Kate Morton of Arlington, Mass., and Miles Morton and wife Maria of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and three grandnephews.
Per Dan’s wishes, a committal service will be held for family and friends at 10 a.m., Fri., Aug. 28 at Fairview Cemetery in Farmington.
