David Brewster Nash, of Edgecomb, died on Singer Island, Fla. Feb. 17 surrounded by close friends and family.
Born in Boston, Mass. on Dec. 15, 1929, he was the son of Oliver Stearns and Elizabeth Marion (Allchin) Nash.
He lived in Sharon, Mass. and spent summers on Little Deer Isle throughout his childhood. He attended Sharon schools and was an alumnus of Lenox Preparatory School and Coyne Electrical School. David also served in the U.S. Army, stationed in the Aleutian Islands.
During his childhood, he formed a strong affinity with the state of Maine. He was a true sportsman and enjoyed sailing Maine’s waters, skiing its mountains, and exploring the coastline.
In 1974, David fulfilled a dream when his young family moved to Blue Hill, purchasing and restoring an old farmhouse. He enjoyed gardening and farming with his wife and daughters, while working as an electrical contractor. During this time, he was a passionate member of the UMaine Orono hockey program and the men’s hockey league at the university.
David was a valued member of the Buck’s Harbor Yacht Club for many years, racing his Ensign sailboat, Puff, to numerous victories and serving on several committees. His daughter, Susie, was his first mate on many occasions. He also served as a deacon of the Blue Hill Congregational Church.
He had a keen interest in history, especially military history; and, upon the invitation of his brother-in-law, Harry Pearce (during the summer of 1994), he was able to take part in the 50th anniversary celebration of the invasion of Normandy.
His granddaughters called him “Cappy” and in recent years, he enjoyed walks with them along the Damariscotta River, feeding the birds, and creating gourmet meals to their delight. David loved music, especially jazz, and during these last months, his collection of jazz gave him great joy, especially as he watched lovely sunsets with family and loved ones on Singer Island.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Nick.
David is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughters and sons-in-law, Amy and Brian Lewis of Madison, Conn., and Susan and James Gold of Swanzey, N.H.; granddaughters, Emily and Julia Lewis and Elizabeth and Kimberly Gold; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sally and Harry Pearce; niece, Wendy Smith (Gary); nephews, Scott Pearce (Juli) and Keith Pearce (Joni); several grandnieces and grandnephews; and dog, Charlie.
A memorial service will take place at The Trask Homestead in Nobleboro this summer.
