David E. Martin, 72, of Jefferson, died Nov. 9, at the Sussman House in Rockport.
He was born on Aug. 13, 1946, to Roy S. and Edith L. (Miller) Martin in Providence, R.I.
David attended Wentworth Institute and worked many years at exotic places, such as McMurdo Station Antarctica, Johnston Atoll, Kuwait and Kwajalein.
He was a fixer of things, be it mechanical or electrical. An avid ham radio person, David held a FCC Advanced Radio Operator license. He took pride in keeping his 1987 Ford pickup truck running smoothly and looking like new. He enjoyed listening to classical music and viewing the night sky with his binocular telescope. He was a Meals on Wheels volunteer and F.I.S.H. driver. He loved stopping in unexpectedly at friends’ houses for a visit. David had many lifelong friends and made it a point to keep in touch with them. He knew the name of every wild flower growing on his property. Bird watching was a favorite pastime and he provided housing, feed and water for them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Edith; and son, Richard.
David is survived by son, James of Columbus Junction, Iowa; daughter, Kelly Kopcak of East Sandwich, Mass.; grandchildren, Neill of Hawaii, Shane, Rebekah and Chase of East Sandwich, Mass., and Nikolas, Tomas and Daniel of Iowa; brothers, James of Woburn, Mass., and Ralph of Robbinston; sister, Alice Roberts of Roslindale, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service will be held in June of next year at David’s maternal grandparents’ family plot in Bartlett Cemetery, Bartlett, Neb.
Memorials or donations may be made to Meals on Wheels, PO Box 474, Damariscotta, ME 04543.
