David Gardner Hinners passed away July 6. He was born in March 25, 1924 in Neuilly, France to Howard Hinners and Anne Gardner Hinners and raised in the Boston area. After attending Phillips Exeter Academy he spent two years at Harvard College before service with the Army Corps of Engineers in India. He then completed his Harvard degree and went on to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
In 1951 David moved to Washington, DC where he worked for the State Department, HEW, the Census Bureau and the Justice Department. After he retired in 1986 he wrote a book, Tong Shao Yi and his Family; a Saga of Two Countries and Three Generations.
In 2005 he moved to Dirigo Pines in Orono.
David Hinners was a world traveler, a sportsman, a history buff and a talented pianist but his greatest passion was sailing. He spent his summers at the family camp in New Harbor where he enjoyed welcoming his many old friends.
He was predeceased by his brother, Richard.
David is survived by his nephews, Chris Hinners of Austin, Tex. and Andrew Hinners (Su Morin) of River Hebert, Nova Scotia; niece, Sarah Jack Hinners (Chris Pasko); and great-nephews, Phineas and Jasper Pasko of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Friends will be gathering for a farewell luncheon 1 p.m., Sun., July 24 at the Irish Inn, Glen Echo, Maryland.
