David Lawrence Snyder passed from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) after a three-year battle on Aug. 12.
David was born in Everett, Mass. in 1937 and was educated in Cambridge, Philadelphia and N.J. He graduated from Farleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, N.J. in 1961. Following coast-to-coast travels throughout the U.S., he was drafted into the Army and served honorably at Headquarters Seventh Army in Europe. Following military service he moved to Whitefield and bought his first house. David had loved Whitefield since his mother sent him there to live with friends for a summer at the age of 13. He came every summer afterward and enjoyed hunting, fishing and raking blueberries.
David married Nancy Raymond (of Gardiner) on Jan. 28, 1972. They had three children and moved to Washington. They enjoyed camping and hiking with their family for many years.
David worked many jobs until taking a job as a probation/parole officer which he had for 23 years. After his retirement he went to work at Med-O-Lark children’s camp in Washington doing a variety of work from landscaping to building decks, ramps and adding-on to nearly every cabin at the camp. He took pride in all his work, especially the flower gardens at the camp, and enjoyed 20 years there until his diagnosis with ALS.
After their children grew up, David and his wife traveled extensively throughout Central America, Europe, the Canadian Rockies and the U.S.
David was predeceased by his parents, Norman and Thelma (Donnelly) Snyder, and brothers, Norman Jr., Donald and Kenneth.
In addition to his loving wife of more than 41 years, David is survived by sons, Kurt Snyder and wife Heddy of Union, and Todd Snyder and wife Jessica of Hope; daughter, Amy Snyder of San Jose, Cal.; grandchildren, Emily, Leah, Kaysan and Logan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
David requested that no funeral be held. Instead, friends and relatives are welcome to visit his wife and family from between 1-4 p.m., Sat., Aug. 17 at 336 Mountain Rd., Washington.
David will be cremated and a burial will be in Whitefield at a later date.
