David W. Libby, 82, passed away peacefully at Quarry Hill in Camden on Oct. 26 with his loving family by his side. David was born on Dec. 9, 1931 in Lewiston to the late Archie and Nellie (McMahon) Libby. David grew up in Lewiston and attended local schools. After leaving school David joined the work force before enlisting in the U.S. Army. While serving his country in the Korean War, David received both a purple heart and a bronze star for his actions. Upon returning to Maine, David began working as a chef in a local restaurant, a small job which would turn into a career he loved. One of the restaurants he spent many years at was Rolando’s in Auburn.
Upon retiring from the kitchen, David went on to be a bartender at the ACME club in Lewiston where he was also an active member for over 20 years. David also worked for the local schools as a private driver getting kids to and from school that were unable to ride on the bus.
In his younger years he loved to fish, have a great time, and sing which was something he enjoyed doing with his mother and continued to do after she passed; he could light up a room with his amazing voice. He was an avid Red Sox fan through thick and thin and was ecstatic when they finally broke the curse and won the World Series in 2004. He also was a big Patriots fan and taught Kat all she knows about football.
David loved his family more than anything and was overjoyed when he found out he was going to be a father. He adored his girls and would do anything for them. When he became a grandfather, his world changed once again and he just absolutely loved being able to spend time with his “baby.”
David loved his Pepsi and his Oreo cookies, a tradition that he carried on during his time at Quarry Hill, he enjoyed saving the can lids to help raise money for the Ronald McDonald House.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Archie, Frank, Morris, William, Leo, Thomas, Iona, Clara, Grace, and Annie.
He is survived by his daughters Kathryn Read of Friendship, and Rebecca Libby of Waldoboro; granddaughter, Kaelyn Read of Friendship; nieces and nephews, Elaine Frederick (aka his BB) of Brockton, Mass., Patti Rodrigue of Lewiston, Melissa Libby, and Donna Smith of Otisfield, Tim Frederick, Nicholas Frederick, and David Frederick, all of Brockton, Mass.; as well as many more nieces and nephews.
