David Whitney, formerly of Waldoboro, died peacefully on June 13. Born in 1934 in Detroit, Mich., David was the son of David Marshall Whitney Jr. of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. and Eugenie Carhartt Davis of Damariscotta.
David enjoyed the Detroit Tigers, sailing, fishing, Vivaldi, Irish whiskey, Zydeco, Broadway theater, and a good book. A graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard College and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, he and his growing family settled in Fairfield County, Conn. He pursued his career in New York, working for pharmaceutical companies McKesson & Robbins, Pfizer, and the medical products division of Union Carbide. As Director of New Business in Corporate Business Development, he led his R & D team to create the first viable titanium hip replacement and the first artificial artery.
In later years he consulted with Rutgers University Small Business Development Center, was an adjunct professor in Rutgers Business School and worked privately with start-up biotech companies in New Orleans as well as organizations in the Philadelphia region in their efforts to achieve initial capital investment. He also co-owned a small printing firm in Bucks County, Penn. with his wife.
In addition to his wife, Penelope, he is survived by three sisters; a brother; ex-wife, Jean; and their three children; as well as five grandchildren.
A private service and interment will be held in Detroit.
