Dr. Diane Kurtzberg Vaughan, 75, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2019 at her winter home in Stamford, Conn. after a long-fought brave battle with lung cancer. Diane was born on Nov. 10, 1943 in Brooklyn, N.Y., beloved daughter of the late Jean and Morris Kurtzberg.
Diane grew up in Queens, N.Y. and received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Hunter College in 1964. She received her PhD in Neuropsychology from Queens College – City University of New York in 1974. Her outstanding research led to a rapid advancement to Professor of Neuroscience at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Diane enjoyed vacations and retirement at the Vaughan family home in New Harbor since the 1970s. Days were filled with enjoying time with family and friends, walking her yellow labs down McFarland Shore Road, searching for treasures at antique shops, and planting flowers in their seaside garden.
Diane had an absolute love of life. She enjoyed gardening, reading, mastering the NY Times crossword puzzle, traveling and playing with her beloved yellow labs Ellie, Charlotte and Vicky. Diane generously supported many community groups throughout Lincoln County, always took the time to listen and lent a helping hand to anyone who asked.
Diane is survived by her beloved husband of 33 years, Prof. Herbert G. Vaughan Jr.; her step-daughter, Gwyneth and husband Michael McCormack (San Francisco, Calif.); step-son, Charles Vaughan (Whitefield); brother, Richard and wife Evelyn Kurtzberg (Lebanon, N.J.); nieces, Terry and husband Larry Horowitz (Plainsboro, N.J.), and Kimberly and husband John Turner (Lebanon, N.J.); grandchildren, Evan, Valeska, Whitman, Ryan, and Connor; grandniece, Julian; grandnephews, Lucas, Matthew and William; and countless friends and professional colleagues.
