Donald Arthur Simmons, 83, of Friendship, passed away peacefully at his home with all of his family by his bedside on Dec. 10.
He was born in Friendship on April 2, 1930 to Ralph A. Simmons and Ruth Lydia Harding. Donald graduated from Thomaston High School in 1948, and joined the Army. He spent his four years in the Army stationed in Korea. He met Emma, they fell in love and were married on June 14, 1954.
After retiring from the Army, Donald was a self-employed fisherman, and he caught lobster, tuna and shrimp to make his living. He named his boat after his loving wife, The F/V Emma E.
Donald was always very happy-go-lucky and friendly. He had a great sense of humor, enjoyed bowling and loved card games, especially solitaire which he played every morning. Donald was also an avid hunter, and loved to play his guitar and sing country music.
Donald was predeceased by brothers, Alfred Simmons and Ralph Simmons.
Donald is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Emma; sons, Donald W. Simmons Sr. of Friendship, and Keith A. Simmons and wife Karen of Friendship; daughters, Dianne Daggett and husband Mark of Cushing, and Annette L. Simmons and companion David Sandblom of Friendship; sister, Florence Cushman of Rockland; 17 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m., Fri., Dec. 20 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Rev. Robert Dorr will officiate.
