Donald E. Simmons Sr., 72, of Cushing, passed away Feb. 10 at his home with his loving family at his side.
He was born Dec. 18, 1936 in Burlington, Vt., a son of the late George (Sr.) and Marguerite Billado Simmons.
At the age of eight, Donald moved to Friendship where he attended local schools. On April 24, 1956 he joined the U.S. Navy. After the service he returned to Friendship and on Dec. 24, 1960 he married the love of his life, Shirley Royer.
Over the years, Donald worked for several different employers including digging clams, driving a truck for Webber Oil and retiring as an automotive mechanic for Shepard’s in Rockland.
He was a member and Past Master of the Meduncook Masonic Lodge #120 AF & AM of Friendship.
He enjoyed watching TV, dancing on Saturday nights at the Echo Hill Dance Hall, listening to all types of music and going to the drive-in theater.
Most of all, Donald loved spending time with his family.
He was predeceased by his brother, Charlie Simmons; sister, Frances Benner; and sister-in-law, Winona Robinson.
Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Shirley Royer Simmons of Cushing; daughters, Debbie Benner and husband Marty of Waldoboro, and Dawn Dumond and husband Mike of Cushing; son, Donald Simmons Jr. and wife Tina of Lincolnville; sister, Mary Grimes of Waldoboro; brother, George Simmons Jr. and wife Cynthia of Cushing; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jane Hannan and husband Roger of Rockland; brothers-in-law, Richard Royer and wife Barbara of Rockland, Peter Royer of Manchester, Conn., Kenneth Royer and wife Wanda of Lampasas, Tex., and Bruce Royer of Rockland; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Fri., Feb. 13 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Celebration of Donald’s life 2 p.m., Sat., Feb. 14 at Hall Funeral Home with Rev. Alan Chamberlin officiating.
