Donald H. Smith Jr., 48, of Wiscasset, died unexpectedly at his home on Jan. 7. He was born in Hartford, Conn. on Feb. 5, 1966, the son of Donald and Faye (Backman) Smith.
Don was raised in Wiscasset and attended Wiscasset schools, graduating from Wiscasset High School with the class of 1984. Shortly after graduating, he entered into a long and dedicated career in public services. He began work at Bowdoin College in the security department, as well as working part time for the Bath Police Department. From there he went on to work full time for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office for 22 years. Don was a longtime firefighter for the Wiscasset Fire Department and was also an EMT for the Wiscasset Ambulance Service. He joined the Wiscasset Police Department in 2007 where he remained until his passing. His attitude and personality will stay with everyone who had the honor of working with him.
Don was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and uncle. He would never turn down anyone in need of help. Recently he found an interest in farming and enjoyed raising his pigs and chickens.
Don will be missed and lovingly remembered by wife, Janet (Jones) Smith; beloved daughter, Kirsten Smith, and stepson, Shaun Robinson, all of Wiscasset; parents, Donald and Faye Smith of Wiscasset; brother, Michael Smith and wife Beth of Wiscasset; and nephews, Steven and Matthew, also of Wiscasset.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don’s memory to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.
There will be a time of visitation from 1-2 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Tues., Jan. 13 at the Wiscasset Community Center.
