Donald W. Leavitt Jr., 77, of Wiscasset, died May 3 at his residence.
He was born in Woolwich on July 15, 1934, son of Donald W. and Dorothy L. (Merry) Leavitt Sr.
He attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1951. On Nov. 20, 1955 he married Merrye V. Wright. He was employed by his father and helped build the Maine State Turnpike. In the 80s he owned and operated Don Leavitt Inc., as a general contractor.
He was an officer in the Wiscasset Rod & Gun Club, a member of the Wiscasset Recreation Committee, Wiscasset Youth coach for baseball and basketball, and a member of the NRA.
Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, family cookouts, animals, training dogs and spending time at camp. He loved attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.
He was predeceased by his wife, Merrye V. Leavitt on Nov. 3, 2011.
He is survived by son, Donald M. Leavitt and wife Valerie; daughter, Vickie L. Hersom and husband Robert, all of Wiscasset; half sister Patti-Jo Barter of Boothbay Harbor; grandsons, Dan and Nick Hersom of Brunswick, Kyle Leavitt and companion Grace Usher of Wiscasset, Casey Leavitt of Bath, and Zach Bradford of Wiscasset; great-grandson, Austin Michael Leavitt; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thurs., May 10 at Daigle Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath. Funeral service 2 p.m., Fri., May 11 at the funeral home in Bath. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Wiscasset Community Center. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Wiscasset at a later date.
