Doris B. Maxwell, 86, of Boothbay Harbor, passed away on May 20 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor, following a brief illness.
Born in Jersey City, N.J., she was a daughter of William V. Burley, Sr. and Selena Browning Burley.
Mrs. Maxwell grew up in St. Louis, Mo. She graduated from the Low-Heywood School in Stamford, Conn. in 1938, and from Barnard College in 1942. During her teenage years, Mrs. Maxwell spent summers in the Boothbay area, where she became an avid sailor and tennis player.
In 1943, she married Charles G. Maxwell in New York City, N.Y., where she spent much of her adult life.
Mrs. Maxwell was the Junior Choir Mother at St. James Church for many years and devoted much of her time to the Knickerbocker Hospital Women’s Auxiliary and Thrift Shop, and to many other philanthropic organizations.
In 1972, Mrs. Maxwell, a longtime summer resident, moved to Boothbay Harbor permanently. Her interests included playing bridge, reading, gardening, and volunteering at the St. Andrews Hospital Thrift Shop. She especially enjoyed her view of the harbor, the islands beyond, and the many spectacular sunsets.
Mrs. Maxwell moved to St. Andrews Village in May 2000 and resided there until her death.
She is survived by her son, John B. Maxwell and wife Carol of Old Saybrook, Conn. and Boothbay Harbor; and niece, Linda Burley Glaser of Lexington, Mass. and East Boothbay.
Memorial service 1 p.m., Tues., May 29 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. The Rev. Dr. Sarah Foulger will officiate. Private burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay.
